4 Caliphs


Caliph is an arabic word meaning successor or deputy, When the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died in 632 CE, the Muslim world faced a crisis which threatened the very existence of the Quranic revelation - who would lead the new community, and how would it survive?

The first Caliph - Abu Bakr

The second Caliph - Omar

The third Caliph - Usman
Caliph Uthman was responsible for the compilation of the Quran and its copying and dissemination-but despite this was overthrown and murdered. This programme was first broadcast in 1997.

The fourth Caliph - Ali
Caliph Ali, the last of the Prophet's friends and companions to hold the office of Caliph. Ali came to power amid the chaos after Uthman's death and spent the next five years fighting a bitter civil war to try to save the infant Muslim state.
